About E3G
We are making the necessary possible. E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate.
Our mission is to deliver a safe climate for all
As an independent think tank now celebrating our 20th anniversary of impactful action, we build the policy solutions and political conditions for systemic action on climate.
What we do
E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action.
We are world leading strategists on the political economy of climate change, dedicated to achieving a safe climate for all. Our aim is to steer the global transformation we need at the pace our planet requires. At E3G we are changing the world one conversation at a time.
E3G stands for Third Generation Environmentalism. The first generation of environmentalists focused on the conservation of species and habitats. The second generation widened the scope to include pollution and natural resources. The third generation of environmentalists is building on this success, working on solutions rather than problems. As third generation environmentalists, we are turning arguments into answers, developing and shaping policy initiatives to engage the required political processes effectively.
We develop strategies
We think strategically to identify the ripest areas for change. We produce scenario analysis of critical climate action, identifying the risks and opportunities to make a difference.
We build coalitions
We build broad-based coalitions to deliver a safe climate. We work closely with like-minded partners in government, politics, civil society, science, the media, public interest foundations and elsewhere.
We produce insights
We analyse the state of climate politics within countries, major institutions and economic sectors. Our insights help set political agendas and inform decision makers.
We think outside the box
We design practical institutional solutions to deliver a safe climate. We work with our partners to implement transformational changes. Our work is global in outlook. Political economy and governance underpin our efforts across six interconnected areas. The scope of our work is unified in its ability to leverage the biggest impacts.
We focus on
- Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics
- Political Economy and Governance
- Clean Economy
- Energy Transition
- Coal to Clean
- Finance and Resilience
- Public Banks and Development
We are strategic thinkers
We combine deep strategic understanding with policy expertise. We analyse the political economy of climate and develop scenarios of how the future may evolve and what can be done to manage risks and exploit opportunities for action.
We are architects of climate action
We bring diverse stakeholders together to align action and foster dialogue. Through our collaborative approach we build connections and bridges, open windows of opportunity and create coalitions for change.
We are trusted brokers
We work closely across the globe with those driving climate politics forward, supporting them to tackle challenges behind-the-scenes. Governments rely on our knowledge of how to get things done in climate policy making.

An international approach
E3G has offices in four key political centres – London, Brussels, Berlin and Washington DC – and a global network of Associates in target countries around the world. Our wider E3G ecosystem of international coalitions enables us to scale up and coordinate climate action.

Local knowledge for targeted intervention
Our global network of Associates includes specialists in the political economy of specific countries and world regions. This allows us to target our interventions as opportunities for dialogue and cooperation present themselves through the UNFCCC or G7/G20 processes, or with changing EU leadership dynamics.

Engaging across boundaries
We create and support international coalitions to scale up and coordinate climate action, working in partnership with public, private and civil society organisations. We engage with complex stakeholder networks and governance structures in open and closed fora. Many of our team are former diplomats or have held senior policy or regulatory roles in the public or private sector. They blend political savviness, discretion and confidentiality.
Our work
The world has run out of time to avoid dangerous climate change. Climate impacts are hitting earlier and harder around the globe. The barriers to achieving a climate-safe world are political and institutional, not financial or technological.
The next decade is critical for delivering climate safety. Transforming societies and economies will require using new strategies and capacities. While reports on solutions to climate change remain key to delivering climate safety, so does rapidly creating real solutions.

Major areas of focus
Governments need to be willing and able to take drastic action to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. Through analysis, diplomacy and coalition building, we work to win the politics and geopolitics of climate.
To achieve a safe climate for all, carbon emissions need to reduce drastically, fast. We build the political conditions and policy solutions to drive the phase-out of coal, oil and gas from the global economy.
Delivering the climate transition will cost trillions of dollars, and the costs of climate impacts will only increase. We promote reforms to financial systems to secure the investment needed for mitigation and adaptation.
E3G consistently ranks in the top ten most influential environmental think tanks by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go to Think Tank Index. You can read more in our annual report and at www.e3g.org
